Injuries & Accidents and Chiropractic Care

Injuries and Accidents Chiropractic Care

After experiencing an accident or injury, we usually pause to do a quick check it see if we feel ok. However, the full extent of an injury may not manifest itself immediately. Many people will experience future problems that can be traced back to the original injury which was not treated properly causing your health and the function(s) of your body to degenerate. At Tuckahoe Family Chiropractic we see patients on a regular basis who have experienced various types of injuries and come to us to properly assess and correct any damage (hidden or otherwise) their accident may have caused.

Injuries You Should See a Chiropractor for

  • Work-related injuries
  • Slip and fall injuries
  • Auto accidents
  • Lifting injuries
  • Sports-related injuries

Injuries and accidents can damage joints, ligaments, and soft tissues. It is also very common for injuries to cause subluxations (misalignment) to the spine. Each type of injury requires different treatment protocols, but they have several things in common. Injuries can cause pain (immediate or delayed), inflammation, and a decreased range of motion. Failure to correct the problems caused by your injuries and accidents can lead to long-term difficulties. When an injury goes untreated and there is damage to the spine and joints, degeneration will start to happen in the joints, which can lead to osteoarthritis. The longer this goes untreated the greater the degeneration will be. Sooner or later it will start to affect the nerves that run from the joints into the spinal cord and up into the brain. An injury to a joint can affect the function of your nervous system.

Tuckahoe Family Chiropractic Treats Injuries

At Tuckahoe Family Chiropractic, one of our primary goals is to find and correct problems and injuries that are causing you pain, and stop any further degeneration to your joints and spine.

We use a combination of treatments including the Graston Technique, chiropractic adjustments, and specific exercises. The Graston Technique specializes in dealing with soft tissue injuries, speeding your recovery, dealing with scar tissue, and increasing your range of motion. The Graston Technique can also help speed the recovery from sprains and strains. Chiropractic adjustments can help any joint in the body, not just the spine. Chiropractic care will make sure that your joints are properly aligned and help restore your range of motion and the function of your body.

It is very important to set an appointment to see us after an injury or accident even if you don’t think you sustained any lasting injury. Only 10% of your nervous system feels pain so it can take months or even years before you become aware of the full extent of your injuries. Or sometimes the pain goes away after a day or two, but the underlying damage was never corrected, allowing further degeneration and osteoarthritis to develop. We regularly see patients whose injuries were never treated initially, and years later are experiencing pain and/or osteoarthritis. Once you have osteoarthritis or joint degeneration, we can never bring you back to 100%. Yes, our care can halt further degeneration and bring pain relief, but it is so much better to set an appointment right away after an injury or accident, discover what damage (if any) has occurred, and correct the problem right away.

Often individuals will start taking pain medications after an injury or accident. These medications do not correct the problem even though they may chemically reduce inflammation for a short period of time — they simply mask the pain.

Symptoms of Untreated Injuries

Over time, untreated injuries will start to manifest themselves in various ways. One of the primary symptoms will be a lot of headaches. This is because 95% of all headaches originate from neck problems. The neck (cervical spine) is the weakest part of the spine and therefore most likely to have subluxations from injuries. Additional symptoms include:

  • Decreased energy
  • Weakened immune system
  • Sleep issues
  • Depression and/or anxiety
  • Pain during weather changes
