Recent research on the nervous system has shown subluxations, misalignments in the normal position of the spinal bones may contribute to infertility in women. The study involved a small amount of women who initially sought out a chiropractor for health issues that did not involve fertility. The interesting thing was all but one became pregnant after chiropractic care, and some of these women had been struggling to get pregnant for over ten years. Chiropractors look for misalignments to the spine and make adjustments to correct these misalignments, allowing the body to function and regulate better. It’s possible that these women had misalignments interfering with fertility and once corrected were able to get pregnant. There is a link because the nerves that travel from the spine control the reproductive organs, so if they’re being interfered with, normal function is reduced. It’s also noted that misalignments can result in an hormonal imbalance further complicating fertility. More research needs to be done on Chiropractic and infertility but the success women with infertility issues getting chiropractic care and becoming pregnant is very promising.
Chiropractic is also important for expectant mothers. Nerve impulses into the womb will play an integral role in the child’s progress. Structurally, the child is at rest inside the pelvic cavity. Spinal distortion, pelvic rotation, and subluxation can all have a negative effect on not only the likelihood of conception but also on development and delivery.

A Chiropractic Miracle
While I was a student in Chiropractic School I would hangout at my older brother’s (who’s also a chiropractor) chiropractic office and observe whenever I was on break. I’ll always remember this one lady who came in with low back pain and sciatica, which is pain radiating down the leg. These are common symptoms patients regularly consult a chiropractor for. This particular patient was a 38-year-old female and I remember my brother going over her history, part of which revealed how she was unable to get pregnant and had two adopted children. I remember my brother relating how misaligned bones in the low back can cause low back pain, but also they go to the reproductive organs and that “who knows” once we start correcting the subluxations and improving nerve supply you may become pregnant. She then started to laugh and explain how she had “every medical procedure” available and nothing has worked. Fast forward four months and I get a call from my brother asking if I remembered patient x back when I was observing his practice, and I said yes. He went on to explain that on her visit she was in her adjustment room crying and told my brother that she didn’t know whether to kick or kiss him, but miraculously she discovered she was pregnant, while in the process of adopting her third child.
This is just one of the many Chiropractic miracles that I have seen over the course of my career.
Chiropractic Care and Pregnancy
We see many pregnant women benefit during the birthing process using chiropractic care. The pelvic floor, abdominal muscles, ovaries and uterus are all supplied by the nerves in the lower spine. Optimal nerve supply happens when the spine is in optimal alignment. Optimal alignment ensures a better labor and delivery process as nature intended it to!
